Ontario: Bar Volo, Yonge Street, Toronto

The other day, when I did rock, we headed up Yonge Street in Toronto to finish the evening at Volo, a much discussed beer bar amongst the Bar Towelling set. With very good reason as well. While I wasn’t able to take my camera and get some shots, I can tell you that the place … Continue reading “Ontario: Bar Volo, Yonge Street, Toronto”

Germany: Aventinus, Schneider And Sohn, Kelheim, Bavaria

The classic wheat double bock or weizenbock from Munich – and not a dunkel weizen! The high test version of Schneider Weisse. The brewery’s bottling hall was on Aventine Street according to Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide. This beer has all the moreishness supreme of the mere weisse but with even more zow-ka-pow and zam! … Continue reading “Germany: Aventinus, Schneider And Sohn, Kelheim, Bavaria”

C’est What, Toronto, Ontario

I was in Toronto for a few days this week and was able to stop by a brewpub called C’est What. I have some notes to add later after I dig through my stuff but wanted to get these pictures up. The Next Day: I appear to have sprayed my things with notes-be-gone so I’ll … Continue reading “C’est What, Toronto, Ontario”

Two From Youngs, London, England

I do not appear to have provided much by the way of information about Young’s. Just Dirty Dick’s and their Double Chocolate Stout – and even that last one was just the barest note. How sad. Young’s are a local brewer in London that has done very well in the export market. Not that long … Continue reading “Two From Youngs, London, England”

Ontario: Pilsner, Steam Whistle Brewing, Metro Toronto

Every once in a while I have a lager and then I remember that I don’t like lagers much. You may have noticed this in the reviews set out here. But I have been meaning to try Steam Whistle for sometime to make sure I am not missing something good and local. Good thing as … Continue reading “Ontario: Pilsner, Steam Whistle Brewing, Metro Toronto”

Boycott!!!

The exceptionally well-named Yates on the States, the tale of a family man from Manchester, England living in Minnesota, has raised this banner. It leads to an interesting consideration of the global brewing industry. Yates’s complaint is that cask conditioned Boddington’s ale will no longer be made as the Manchester, England factory – the Strangeways … Continue reading “Boycott!!!”

Quick Note: St. Peter’s Old Style Porter

This beer from St. Peter’s is a ruby brown ale under an oddly ivory head. I’ve never seen an ivory head: tan plus hints of green-grey. This is old style, like Burton Bridge porter: barley candy plus molasses with lime and green hops. The yeast is sour cream or soured milk or something in between. … Continue reading “Quick Note: St. Peter’s Old Style Porter”

New York: Southern Tier Brewing, Lakewood

I have written about Southern Tier‘s porter a couple of times and reviewed the IPA. All but the Hop Sun were in a variety twelve along with the porter that I picked up at the beginning of July – again obeying the golden rule of variety twelves (all ales and four styles please). I have enjoyed everything they have thrown at … Continue reading “New York: Southern Tier Brewing, Lakewood”
