Big Hop Bombs: Un*Earthly, Southern Tier, New York, USA

Can these guys make a bad beer?

This ale pours a light tan foam and rim over bright cherry-amber ale. You pick up heat from the first whiff. Check the bottle. Yikes 11%. I thought it was a Double IPA – but no…it’s an Imperial IPA. Good thing the Mets and Braves went to 14 innings. Another sniff adds rich greens and stone-fruit malt. Sip. Spicy hops over big body heat. It is creamy yet hot saucey. And a pile of weedy greens. And, yes, its 11%. Wow. Lots of graininess and fruit-juiciness even with the hot hot heat.

A very legitimate challanger to Double Bastard from Stone. Too bad I didn’t remember to note the price when I got it at Galeville a couple of weeks ago.

Hey, Alan – I think the * in the subject line for this post has buggered your RSS feed again. It’s no longer showing up at RSBS or in my RSS reader.

Danged dasterdly “*”!!! But that is on the label this time, Greg. I will have to balance journalistic credibility with technological capability.

OK, but it’s an unfortunate choice as I (and probably meny others) read your blog via RSS almost exclusively. I follow so many blogs now that visiting them directly just isn’t realistic – RSBS and my RSS reader are the most practical solution.

Perhaps you could change the subject, and just mention the ‘*’ in the text of the article? Otherwise, the feed will remain dead.

Alternatively, we could try and figure out why the hell your RSS feed is so persnickety about certain characters in the post titles… 😉

Perchance it is your choice of aggregator? What is the effect? Do you just lose the one entry but see all the others?

The entire feed is dead. And it’s not just my aggregator (Sage, which is a Firefox add-on) that’s having the problem, it’s also whatever aggregator they’re using at RSBS.

It’s definately a problem with the feed itself rather than the aggegator(s) having a problem. When I check out http://beerblog.genx40.com/rss in Firefox (not using Sage), I get a page with the following:

    XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
    Location: http://beerblog.genx40.com/rss
Line Number 46, Column 48: < title>Tom Paine Original Brown Ale, Harvey & Son, Lewes, England

And hell, now that I’ve checked that out, it looks like it’s not the ‘*’ after all, it’s the ‘&’ in a different post entirely! Which is the same problem that you had with the feed a couple of months back, I seem to recall.

    Alan – May 16, 2006 1:04 PM
OK, so if I remove the “&” as I will right now, check the feed to see if it is up. I make a huuuuuuuge distinction between not using “*” and not using “&”.

    Alan – May 16, 2006 1:09 PM
The font that was showing up on the front page for the character “&” was quite distinct and maybe it is not recognized by Aggregatotron Central as a HTML entity at all. Dastards all! Makes me want to blog in cave paintings as I already suggested doing over here, though morse code is more practical.

I just noticed that the “*” character on my key board is a five pointed thing and that the “8” on the bottle is a six pointed thing. What fresh form of font madness is that?

’tis working now. Should show up in RSBS again soon as well.

Be careful with those ‘&’s from now on, y’hear?

On another note – if I ever feel the urge to write some stuff that doesn’t quite fit in on the Bar Towel newsfeed and my column at Gremolata, would you be interested in running it here?

I briefly considered starting my own beer blog, but I don’t think I’ll have enough material to post to make it worthwhile, unless I just copy stuff from other blogs which just seems redundant and/or unethical.

So if you need a Man In Toronto…

Bring it on, baby. You are the man in Toronto. Send me something to the beerblog@gmail.com and I will post it under your name and sooner or later I will send you the keys to the castle of the admin page.

Cool beans. I don’t have anything to post at the moment, but when I do, you’ll be the first to know.

Popped another. $6.49 at the Galeville grocery. One of the best deals in big IPAs going.

Picked another up two weeks ago in Syracuse and still loving it. A big IPA with that northeast USA creamy style without that “I just drank lemon Pledge” feel.
